It's a good thing to know how to make your own dough. Plus, being able to make whole wheat dough gives you a healthier option, and one that has that has a richer, nuttier, more wholesome kind of flavor to it.
For anyone intimidated by the idea of making their own pizza crust--it's okay, like pizza itself, pizza dough is simple too.
Whole Wheat Pizza Crust
makes one pizza
1 1/8 cups warm water
3 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 1/2 tablespoons honey
1 1/2 tablespoon olive oil
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup all-purpose flour, divided
1 teaspoon salt
In a large bowl, combine water,
yeast, honey, and olive oil. Mix together with a spoon, then let sit until
foamy, this should take about 10 minutes. Add in 2 cups whole-wheat flour, ½ cup
of all-purpose flour, and salt, stirring with a spoon until the dough comes
together but it still sticky. Using your hands, form the dough into a ball and
work the additional 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (you don’t need to use all if it
is not needed) in to the dough, kneading it for a few minutes on a floured
surface.
Rub the same bowl with olive oil
then place the dough inside, turning to coat. Cover with a towel and place in a
warm place. Leave it to rise for about 1½ hours.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
After the dough has risen, punch it
down and place it back on the floured surface. Using your hands or a rolling
pin, shape it as you like. Place the towel back over the dough and let sit in a
warm place for 10 minutes.
Add your desired toppings. Bake the
pizza for 25-30 minutes, or until crust and cheese are both golden.
